Civil War letter, 26 June 1863.

The Collection consists of one letter dated 26 June 1863 from Eli Hiatt to his brother Nathan. The letter was written from Randolph County and sent to Nathan at a hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. Eli tells Nathan that the family is doing well and urges his brother to try and get a discharge. He also tells of his plans to join a new state militia.

Before the Civil War there were several members of the Hiatt family in Randolph County, Indiana. Most of them appear to have been Quakers. Nathan Hiatt lived in Farmland, Indiana before enlisting in the Union Army on 2 August 1862. He mustered into the 84th Indiana Infantry on 2 August 1862.
